Check a supplier’s GST number before you trust them
Paste any GSTIN to see if it is correctly formed, which state it belongs to, the PAN inside it and the type of business. The format check runs instantly in your browser. Then check the live registration status from GST records in one click.
NewFind a company’s GSTIN by name or PAN
Got the company name but not the GST number? Type the legal name (as on the invoice) or its PAN. You get every GST registration with its state, city and status, so you can pick the branch you deal with.
Results come from public GST records via a third-party provider, up to 10 registrations per company. GSTRisk is not affiliated with GSTN. Confirm important details on gst.gov.in.
What this check tells you, and what it doesn’t
It tells you
Whether the 15 characters follow the official GSTIN structure and the check digit is right. A wrong check digit means the number was mistyped or made up.
It decodes
The state of registration, the PAN of the holder, whether the holder is a company, firm, proprietor, HUF or trust, and the registration number under that PAN.
It does not confirm
That the registration is active today or that the business files its returns. For that, press Check live GST status after a valid result, or search the number on the GST portal’s Search Taxpayer page. To see whether the supplier files GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B, the live check shows its recent return filings too.
Bulk GSTIN validator
Paste your vendor or customer list: one GSTIN per line, or copied straight from Excel. Up to 500 at a time. Duplicates are flagged and you can download the results as CSV.
How to read a GSTIN
Every GSTIN has 15 characters in five parts. Once you know the parts, a fake or mistyped number is often easy to spot.

Why checking suppliers matters
Your input tax credit depends on them
Under Section 16(2)(aa) of the CGST Act, you can claim ITC only when the supplier has reported the invoice in their GSTR-1 and it appears in your GSTR-2B. If they don’t file, your credit is stuck.
Registrations get cancelled
A registration can be cancelled when a regular taxpayer does not file returns for six months in a row. Invoices from a cancelled GSTIN don’t give you valid credit.
Fake GSTINs are used on fake invoices
A made-up GSTIN usually fails the check digit or has a state code that doesn’t match the address. A 10-second check before you pay can save a reversal and interest later.

Questions
Is my data stored when I use the checker?
The format check and the bulk validator run entirely in your browser, so nothing is sent. If you press Check live GST status, that one GSTIN is sent to our server to fetch its public registration and return-filing details, and the result is kept for up to 7 days so repeat checks are instant. Lookups are not linked to your name or email. See our Privacy Policy.
The checker says “valid”. Does that mean the business is genuine?
No. It means the number is correctly formed. A correctly formed GSTIN can still be cancelled, suspended or belong to a different business. Always confirm the name and status on the GST portal before you rely on it.
Why does a GSTIN fail the check digit?
The last character is calculated from the first 14. If even one character is wrong, the check digit won’t match. Most failures are typing mistakes, such as 0 for O or 1 for I, so check with the supplier first.
What are GSTINs that don’t contain a PAN?
Some registrations, such as TDS deductors (using a TAN), UN bodies, embassies and non-resident online service providers, follow a different pattern. The checker labels these so you know to confirm them separately.
